Description:
Species Description - Rhizome compact, ascending; rhizome scales 2-3 mm long, 0.3 mm wide, bicolorous with a narrow, thickened black central streak and light brown margin; fronds to 45 cm tall, clumped; stipe ½-¾ the frond length, atropurpureous to black, lustrous, glabrous, terete (to shallowly grooved distally); blade digitate, the 4-7 pinnae all pinnate, radiating from the tip of stipe; pinna rachis grooved with narrow brown wings, segments dimidiate, auricled; upper surface glabrous; lower surface with sparse, minute (less than 0.1 mm long) clavate white hairs; veins obscure; sori marginal, short, several (6-10) on both long edges of segment and 1-3 on narrow inner edge; indusium pale, thin, 0.3-0.5 mm wide, 0.5-0.8 mm long; spores orange-tan.

Discussion:
Adiantum radiatum Linnaeus, Sp. pl. 2: 1094. 1753. Cheilanthes radiata (Linnaeus) J. Smith, J. Bot. (Hooker) 4: 159. 1841. Hypolepis radiata (Linnaeus) Hooker, Sp. fil. 2: 72. 1852. Lectotype (chosen by Lellinger, Mem. New York Bot. Gard. 23: 3. 1972). Jamaica(?). Sloane “Adiant. 3 radiatum” (BM). LINN 1252.1 was not in LINN until after 1755 (Jackson, 1912). The distinctive frond architecture sets A. radiata apart from the other Adiantopsis species, which more closely resemble species of Cheilanthes.
