Description:

Species Description - Dioecious or rarely monoecious scrambling shrub or treelet, 3-7 m tall and reaching a dbh of 5 cm; branchlets terete or subangular, densely covered with minute appressed stellate-lepidote hairs. Leaves opposite, rarely ternate; petioles 1-2 cm long; lamina drying golden-brown, paler on the lower surface due to a dense indumentum, chartaceous, elliptic or lanceolate to oblanceolate, 10-26 X 4-10 cm, the base acute to obtuse, sometimes with mite domatia up to 7 mm long, the apex long-acuminate, the tip up to 2.5 cm long, both leaf surfaces persistently and densely pubescent with minute appressed stellate and stellate-lepidote hairs, with 10-16 pairs of secondary veins, these smooth above, raised below, the margin finely crenate to serrate. Cymes 1.5-4 cm long, densely covered with minute stellate and stellate-lepidote hairs, with 10-15 flowers. Fresh flowers yellow; male floral cup subglobose, 2.3-3 mm in diam., 2.3-2.8 mm high, the floral roof moderately raised and glabrous except for a few hairs on the upper side of the tepals, the 4-5 tepals shortly triangular or rounded and 0.5-1 mm long, often fused to a wavy rim; stamens 8-14; female floral cup similar in size and shape to the male cups, the floral roof almost flat except for an acutely conical central tube sheathing the styles; styles 4-6. Fruiting receptacle subglobose and crowned by the persistent tepals, 0.8-1.5 cm in diam., sometimes with minute tubercles, when fresh bright red or purple; drupelets 3-6, each with a reddish stylar aril.

Discussion:

Siparuna stellulata is distinguished by a dense indumentum of minute appressed stellate hairs. The indumentum is persistent on both leaf surfaces, and the leaves usually have long drip tips and dry golden-brown. A few collections possess small mite domatia at the lamina bases (Fig. 70B). Unfortunately, the type in Berlin was lost, leaving only the K duplicate and a single leaf at GH. Probably because of the scarce original material, the name has not been used widely, and when used, was misapplied. There can be no doubt, however, that the three names here synonymized all represent S. stellulata. The only other species with a similar indumentum, S. gigantotepala, has broader leaves and much longer tepals.

Type material of Siparuna asterotricha and S. huilensis (names here synonymized) has inflorescences with male and female flowers. Such occasional leaky dioecy is also found in S. cajamarcensis, S. echinata, S. muricata, and S. tomentosa (see the discussion under S. muricata).
