Distribution (from PLANTAE): Of the four genera, Ilex is by far the largest with 300-400 species, of irregularly cosmopolitan distribution. Phelline has about ten species in New Caledonia. Sphenostemon has about seven in the southwestern Pacific. Nemopanthus, in eastern North America, is monotypic.
