Description:
Latin Diagnosis - Arbor parva exilis glabra cortice rubra; ramuli juvenes canaliculata, cito teretes. Petioli 0.8-2.0 mm longi; laminae 11.5-16.8 cm longae, 5.1-6.8 cm latae, ellipticae usque ovato-vel oblongo-ellipticae, ápice abrupte caudato, basi acuta vel acuta et truncata usque subcordata incisura 1.0 mm profunda; superficies costae mediae plana usque leviter canaliculata, pagina inferior prominens, rotundata ad basem, 2-angulata vel peranguste 2-alata ca 1/3 distantiae versus apicem; nervi laterales manifesti obscure in sicco. Cryptae stomatatae 75-155 judiametris, 30-37 µ altae, 15-20 in mm2; sclerides terminales foliariae columnares. Pedunculi 1-flori, 1-3 in quoque later ad nodos aphyllos ramulorum usque 4.0 mm crassorum, plerumque intra zonam foliorum, probabiliter ad axillas aliquando, singuli 0.6-2.0 mm longi cum internodio 1; bracteae 1.5-2.6 mm longae, ovatae vel ovato-triangulares, acutae, persistentes sub anthesi; pedicelli 2.6-4.0 mm longi. Flores tetrameri, viridi-flavi. Calyx ovarium inferior includens 5.0-6.5 mm longus, obconicus; calyx omnino clausus usque ad anthesem, turn ad lineas conjunctionis loborum rumpens; lobi sub anthesi 3.4-3.9 mm longi, 2.8-2.9 mm lati, triangulares, acuti, 3.5-4.0 mm longi ab staminibus; hypanthium liberum 0.5-1.0 mm longum. Petala ignota. Antherae 1.9 mm longae; thecae 1.1 mm longae; glandula 0.7 mm longa cum centro 0.8 mm ab apice antherae; cauda 0.7-1.0 mm longa. Ovarium 3-loculare, placentation axiali-basilari; ovula 3 in quoque loculo. Fructus ignotus.
Description - Midrib xylem tubular; stomatal crypts a modified Type II, large and shallow, averaging in a leaf ca 115 µ diam, 33 µ high, 17 per sq. mm (extremes given above); upper epidermis mostly one cell thick, occasionally two cells thick in scattered places in the same leaf, mucilaginous walls present in most of the cells, from 1/2-2/3 of the cell depth; hypodermis none; free stone cells scattered along midrib to within ca 2 cm of the tip; terminal sclereids columnar but often slanting, branching near both epidermises, especially the upper.

Discussion:
Mouriri panamensis is the less-reduced member of this distinctive pair of species, closely related to M. micranthera but differing in having shorter petioles, somewhat smaller stomatal crypts, larger flowers including longer anthers, and 3 locules rather than 2.
