Description:
Description Author and Date: Frank Almeda, based on Almeda, F. (2009). Melastomataceae. In: G. Davidse, M. Sousa-Sânchez, S. Knapp, & F. Chiang (eds.), Flora Mesoamericana: Cucurbitaceae a Polemoniaceae. 4(1): 164-338.
Type: Holotype: Costa Rica, Hammel 9682 (CAS!)
Description: Shrub or small tree 1-5 m tall. Internodes terete and glabrate at maturity; uppermost branchlets, vegetative buds, and inflorescences beset with a sparse to moderate covering of smooth spreading hairs (2-3.5 mm long) that is typically intermixed with inconspicuous, early deciduous, asperous-headed hairs and underlain by a moderate to dense understory of stellulate-furfuraceous or short asperous-headed hairs. Leaves of a pair somewhat unequal in size; blades 5-7-nerved or 5-7-plinerved abaxially with pocket acarodomatia typically formed in the angle between the median vein and each of the two proximal lateral veins, 11.5-29 x 6.1-14.5 cm, elliptic, apex long-acuminate, base acute to cuneate, margin entire to inconspicuously crenulate, the adaxial surface moderately strigose to subhirsute with smooth hairs mostly 1-2 mm long, the abaxial surface moderately hirsute with a mixture of smooth hairs (1-2.5 mm long) and minute glandular hairs essentially restricted to the primary and higher order veins. Inflorescence a pseudolateral modified dichasium 3-6 cm long divaricately branched from the base; flowers 5-merous on pedicels 1-2.5 mm long, sparingly to moderately stellulate-furfuraceous and encircled basally by a deciduous tufted ring of barbellate or asperous-headed hairs. Hypanthium moderately to sparsely covered with spreading smooth hairs 0.5-2 mm long and a sparse understory of sessile stellulate-furfuraceous hairs. Calyx fused in bud and crowned by an apiculum 0.5 mm long but rupturing irregularly at anthesis into 3-5 hyaline, persistent, rounded lobes 0.5 mm long; exterior calyx teeth subulate, 0.5-1 mm long. Petals glabrous and reflexed, white or reportedly pale pink, oblong, 3-3.5 x 1-1.5 mm. Filaments constricted distally, 1.5-2 mm long, anthers 1-1.5 (-1.75) mm long, yellow with a somewhat dorsally inclined pore; connective slightly thickened dorsally but neither prolonged nor appendaged dorso-basally. Ovary 5-locular, completely inferior, apex fluted and elevated into a glandular-puberulent lobulate collar ca. 0.5 mm high that becomes bowl-like and depressed on maturing fruits. Berry dark purple at maturity, 6-7 x 5-6 mm when dry. Seeds 0.5 mm long, irregularly angulate with a densely papillate testa.
Habitat and Distribution: Local on river banks, shaded sites, and light gaps in rain forests. 0-750 (-1000) m. Also in Colombia (Chocó) and Ecuador (Esmeraldas). COSTA RICA (Herrera 3985, CAS); PANAMA (Almeda et al. 7542, CAS).
