Description: Shrub 1-2 m, the quadrisulcate upper branchlets, petioles, primary abaxial leaf veins, and inflorescences densely to moderately covered with appressed smooth hairs 1-1.5 mm long. Leaves 5-12 x 1.5-4 cm, elliptic to elliptic-ovate, 5(-7)-plinerved, apex gradually acuminate, base acute to obtuse, the margin ciliate-crenulate, sparsely to moderately covered with subappressed smooth hairs 1-1.5 mm long on both surfaces. Inflorescences solitary in opposite upper leaf axils, 4-6 cm long; flowers 5-merous, sessile and unilateral on ultimate branchlets, the persistent bracteoles 1 mm long, oblong. Hypanthium 1.5-2.5 mm long, copiously covered with somewhat spreading smooth (gland-tipped in part) hairs 1-2 mm long. Calyx lobes 0.3-0.5 mm long, ovate. The conspicuous exterior calyx teeth 0.7-1 mm long, subulate. Petals 2.5-3 x 0.5-1 mm, narrowly subulate, glabrous. Filaments 1.5-2.5 mm long; anther thecae 1-1.5 mm long, oblong with a ventro-terminal pore; connective simple. Ovary 4-5-celled, ¾-inferior (in fruit); berry smooth.

Habitat and Distribution: Cloud forest. 800 m. (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia). COSTA RICA (Kriebel 3913, CAS, INB, MO).
