Description:

Type: Holotype: Costa Rica, Brenes 6160 (F!).

Description: Shrub or small tree 2-5 m tall, the young branchlets, petioles, primary leaf veins abaxially, and inflorescence densely white, mealy-furfuraceous. Leaves 13-25(-36) X 7.5-13.5(-19) cm, elliptic to ovate-elliptic, 5-7-plinerved, base acute, apex acute to acuminate, the margin entire or obscurely undulate-crenulate, mostly glabrous adaxially at maturity, moderately furfuraceous on secondaries and tertiaries abaxially but glabrous on actual surface. Inflorescence (including peduncle) 5.5-13 cm long; flowers 5-merous and sessile, the deciduous bracteoles somewhat concave, elliptic-ovate to lanceolate, 1-5 mm long. Hypanthium densely mealy-furfuraceous; calyx lobes broadly rounded to undulate, up to 0.5 mm long, the external triangular teeth (on fruiting hypanthia) 1-2 mm long. Petals lanceolate, 2-4 X 1 mm, furfuraceous abaxially. Filaments 1.5-2 mm long; anther thecae 1-1.5 mm long with a dorsally inclined pore; connective prolonged into a dorso-basal glandular tooth ca 0.25 mm long. Ovary 5-celled, completely inferior; berry 10-costate.

Habitat and Distribution: Rain forest,stream margins. 100-1,500 m. (Colombia, Ecuador.) NICARAGUA (Nee & Tellez 28058, CAS); COSTA RICA (Almeda et al.4313, CAS); PANAMA (Almeda et al. 5936, CAS).
