Description: Shrub or small tree 1-5 m with caducously furfuraceous to glabrate vegetative buds, branchlets, abaxial foliar veins, and inflorescences, the compressed-rounded branchlets bearing well-defined interpetiolar ridges confluent with the petioles to form deflexed flaplike outgrowths. Leaves 15-28(-35) X 5.5-16 cm, oblong-elliptic to obovate, 3-5-plinerved, base acute to cuneate and decurrent on the petiole, apex bluntly acute to short-acuminate, the margin entire, essentially glabrous on both surfaces. Panicle 3-6 cm long, multiflorous; flowers 5-merous, sessile and secund on the divaricate branchlets; the tardily deciduous bracteoles concave, obovate to suborbicular, 3-5 X 2-4 mm. Hypanthium moderately to densely furfuraceous; calyx lobes broadly depressed triangular to undulate, up to 0.5 mm long, the blunt exterior teeth (on fruiting hypanthium) ca. 0.25 mm long. Petals lanceolate, 2-3 X 0.75-1 mm, furfuraceous adaxially. Filaments 2-2.5 mm long; anther thecae 1.5 mm long with a dorsally inclined pore; the dorso-basal minutely gland-edged appendage ca. 0.25 mm long. Ovary 5-celled, 2/3 inferior; berry 10-costate.
Habitat and Distribution: Cloud forest, rain forest. 200-1,330 m. (Colombia, Ecuador.) COSTA RICA (Foster 4168, CAS); PANAMA (Antonio 3641, CAS).
