Type: Brazil. Minas Gerais: In sylvis prope San Gabriel ad radices montis Serra Negra, prov. Minas Geraes, haud procul a finibus provinciae Rio de Janeiro. St. Hilaire s.n. (syntypes: BR, P-3 sheets).
Description: Trees up to 8 m tall; young branches rounded, densely covered by long, ferrugineous, trichomes, a little branched at the base, interpetiolar region obsured by the indument. Leaves discolorous; petioles 1-3.5 cm; blades 13.5-45 x 5-16 cm, elliptic to lanceolate, apex acute to apiculate, base acute to rounded, margin entire, chartacecous, longitudinal nerves 3, with an additional, faint, marginal pair, supra-basal, up to 10 mm above the base, abaxial surface moderately covered by a ferruginous indument consisting of dendritic trichomes of long arms on the blade, ca. 0.7 mm diam., of short arms on the veins, ca. 0.3 mm diam. Panicles 4.5-10 x 3-6 cm, glomerulate, terminal, densely covered by ferruginous, long trichomes a little branched at the base; bracts and bracteoles lanceolate, up to 10.2 mm long, caducous. Flowers 8-9-merous. Hypanthium 3.3 mm long, campanulate, inner surface glabrous, outer densely covered by long, ferruginous, trichomes only branched at the base; torus with sparse glandular trichomes. Calyx lobate, caducous in fruit, inner surface glabrous, outer surfaces densely covered by trichomes similar to the ones on the hypanthium; tube 1.9 mm long, inner lobes triangular, 0.2 mm long, outer teeth subulate. Petals 8.5-8.6 x 2.7 mm. Stamens yellow, slightly dimorphic; filaments 4-6.1 mm long, glabrous; connectives not prolonged below the thecae, unappendaged; anthers 3.2-3.5 mm long, oblong to falciform, bilobed at base, with a single terminal, ventrally displaced, small pore, ca. 0.1 mm diam. Ovary 2.4 mm long, 1/3 adherent to the hypanthium, 3-4-locular, apex glabrous; style 7 mm long, straight, punctiform, with sparse glandular trihomes. Fruits up to 12 x 12 mm, purple, several seeds.
Habitat and Distribution: Miconia speciosa has been reported for Bahia and Minas Gerais states, from 600 to 950m asl.
