Description:
Description Author and Date: Frank Almeda, based on Almeda, F. (2009). Melastomataceae. In: G. Davidse, M. Sousa-Sânchez, S. Knapp, & F. Chiang (eds.), Flora Mesoamericana: Cucurbitaceae a Polemoniaceae. 4(1): 164-338.
Type: Holotype: Colombia, Triana 3956 (BR!).
Description: Shrub or small tree 1-3 m tall, the uppermost quadrisulcate to rounded-quadrate internodes and petioles moderately to sparsely covered with spreading smooth hairs 1-4 (-8) mm long. The nodes copiously covered with smooth basally flattened hairs 0.4-1 cm long. Leaves of a pair equal to somewhat unequal in size, the blade 8.3-32.5 x 3.5-10 cm, ovate-elliptic to oblong-elliptic, 5-nerved, apex short-acuminate, base obtuse to rounded, the margin serrulate to crenulate-serrulate and finely ciliate, the adaxial surface moderately to sparsely covered with spreading smooth hairs (1-)3-5 mm long, the abaxial surface moderately to sparsely covered with appressed to antrorsely spreading smooth hairs 1-3(-5) mm long and sparsely underlain with minute glands; petioles 1-5.6 cm long. Inflorescence a glabrous panicle 6-13(-25) cm long with 5-merous, sessile flowers that are secund on arching ultimate branches; the bracteoles triangular-ovate, 1 x 1 mm, ciliolate and persistent. Hypanthium glabrous; calyx ca. 0.5 mm long, essentially truncate to shallowly undulate, exterior teeth minute and callose-thickened to obsolete. Petals glabrous abaxially and somewhat puncticulate or minutely pustulate on the adaxial surface when dry, oblong to oblong-obovate, 2.5-3 x 1-1.2 mm. Anthers isomorphic, deep pink but pale yellow-white apically, 1 mm long, linear-oblong with a ventrally inclined pore; connective neither prolonged nor appendaged. Style glabrous, 2.5 mm long, stigma ± truncate; ovary 3-locular, 9/10 inferior, apex sparsely glandular-puberulent; berry purple when mature, 3-4 x 4-5 mm when dry. Seeds ovoid, the testa vaguely rugulate, 1 mm long.
Habitat and Distribution: Rain forest and low cloud forest. 30-1500 m. Colombia and Ecuador. COSTA RICA (Segura & Queseda 153, CAS); PANAMA (Aranda & Valdespino 95, CAS).
