Description:
Description Author and Date: Description by Mayara K. Caddah, 2013.
Type: Brazil. Rio de Janeiro. Langsdorff s.n. (holotype: B – destroyed, isotypes: P, F-fragment).
Description: Trees up to 4 m tall; young branches flattened, with interpetiolar ridges, moderate to densely covered by sessile-stellate trichomes. Leaves discolorous to concolorous; petioles 0.5-1.5 (3.5) cm, flattened; blades 15-25 x 5.5-11 (17) cm, elliptic, apex shortly acuminate to acute, base decurrent, margin entire to slightly repand, membranaceous, longitudinal nerves 3, with an additional faint, marginal pair, supra-basal up to 6 cm above the base, abaxial surface with moderate to dense canescent indument consisting of flattened, sessile-stellate trichomes up to 0.1 mm diam. Panicles 5-13 x 4-6 cm, glomerulate, sometimes resembling a very congested scorpioid inflorescensce, terminal, sometimes with additional branches, densely covered by flattened, sessile-stellate trichomes 0.1 mm diam.; bracts up to 2.7 mm long, lanceolate, late caducous, sometimes persistent; bracteoles up to 0.5 mm long, triangular to lanceolate, persistent. Flowers (4) 5-merous. Hypanthium 1.7-2.1 mm long, campanulate, inner surface glabrous, outer densely covered with flattened, sessile-stellate trichomes of ca. 0.1 mm diam.; torus glabrous. Calyx truncate, caducous in fruit, inner surface glabrous, outer with trichomes similar to the ones on the hypanthium; tube 0.2-0.5 mm long, outer teeth 0.1 mm long, subulate. Petals 2-2.2 x 1-1.1 mm. Stamens white, isomorphic to slightly dimorphic; filaments 2.6-3.5 mm long, glabrous; connectives not prolonged below the thecae, with two ventral lobes; anthers 2.5-2.6 mm long, oblong, with a single terminal, moderate pore ca. 0.2 mm. Ovary 0.7-0.9 mm long, 2/3 adherent to the hypanthium, 3-locular, apex glabrous; style 4.8-5.2 mm long, straight, capitate, glabrous. Fruits baccate, 3.9-3.7 mm diam., purple, 5-12 seeds.
Habitat and Distribution: Miconia discolor has a peculiar distribution because its preferred habitat is in the inland, seasonal forests, in the states of Paraná, São Paulo and also Mato Grosso do Sul, reaching Paraguay and Argentina by the Paraná River Basin. It has been found in the coastal, evergreen forests as well, from the states of Santa Catarina to Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais, ranging from 180 to 1400m asl.
