Type: Holotype: Panama, Cooper 575 (F!).

Description: Shrubs 1.5-3 m tall, the branchlets, primary and secondary veins below, and hypanthia moderately to densely furfuraceous with thickened claviform, minutely roughened hairs mostly 0.5-1 mm long. Leaves 5-nerved, elliptic, 8-19.2 cm long, 4-9.5 cm wide, above glabrous, below sparsely and caducously granulose on the tertiary and higher order veins, apex acuminate, base acute to obtuse, the margin entire to obscurely undulate-serrulate. Inflorescence a fascicled cluster borne in the upper leaf axils; flowers 4-merous, sessile, the persistent, triangular to oblong bracteoles 1.5-3 X 0.5-1 mm. Calyx lobes triangular-ovate, 1-1.5 mm long and wide, the subulate exterior teeth 0.5 mm long. Petals white to pale pink, glabrous, linear-oblong, 2.5 X 1 mm. Filaments 1-1.5 mm long; anther sacs white or pale pink, 1.5 mm long with a dorsally inclined pore; connective prolonged into a dorso-basal glandular tooth 0.3 mm long. Ovary 4-locular, 3/4 inferior, the apical collar glandular-puberulent, ca 0.3 mm high; berry 5-6 mm diam, orange when ripe. Seeds rugulate and somewhat angulate, yellow-brown, 0.5-0.75 mm long.

Habitat and Distribution: Local, disturbed sites, rain forest. 0-800 m. Also in Colombia (Chocó) and Ecuador.
