Puerto Rico. Luquillo National Forest, at (and near) peak of El Yunque; at end of Forest Road #10. Alt. 1000 - 1050 m. (3281 - 3445 ft.)

Description:

Shrub to 1.5 m. tall; inflorescence axes, hypanthia, calyx all bright red-pubescent; petals white, but in bud with a very slight red tinge at tips; anthers white (actinomorphic); veins of leaves all impressed above. Phenology of specimen: Fertile.
Habitat:

Dwarf moist montane forest surrounded by clouds-fog, much storm damage visible. Only in open areas. With Tetrazygia urbanii, Miconia pachyphylla, M. pycnoneura, M. racemosa, M. sintenisii, M. foveolata, Mecranium latifolium, Henriettea squamulosa, Nepsera aquatica. Locally common.
