Description:
Author: Scott A. Mori, Ghillean T. Prance & Nathan P. Smith
Type: Brazil. Amazonas: Manaus-Itacoatiararo ad, Km 69, 05 Sep 1973 (fl), Prance, Rodrigues, Lleras, Coelho & Monteiro 17516 (holotype, INPA; isotypes, NY, S).
Description: Trees to 25 m tall, the young branches glabrous, lenticellate. Leaves: petioles (15-)18-40 mm long, glabrous, slightly winged next to lamina, not winged near base, slightly canaliculate; blades elliptic, 6-15(-23) x 3.5-7.5(-10) cm, glabrous on both surfaces, the base subcuneate and shortly decurrent to petiole, the margins serrulate to crenulate, the apex acuminate, acumen 0.5-3 cm long, the midrib prominulous above, prominent and glabrous beneath, the primary veins in 12-20 pairs, without domatia at junction of midrib, prominent on both surfaces, 5-15 mm apart at base. Inflorescences terminal or subterminal, little-branched panicles (2-3 branched), branches 2-4 cm long, glabrous, not crustaceous. Flowers sessile; calyx campanulate, ca 2.0 mm long, the lobes acute, 1 mm long, glabrous on exterior; petals 4.0-8.0 mm long, oblong-ovate, glabrous, yellow; androecium actinomorphic, ca 3.5-4.0 mm diam. at base, 3 mm tall, yellow, with 10-12 reflexed stamens (7-9 apical and 3-4 inserted on interior); gynoecium with 3-locular ovary, the style short. Fruits 6.5-10.0 cm long, 2.7-3.2 cm wide at apex, slightly 3 sided, not conspicuously costate, the calycine ring ca. 0.3 cm below apex, the line of opercular dehiscence distinctly lipped, smooth not toothed; operculum 2.3 cm diam. at apex, convex, the columella triangular. Seeds unknown.
Common names: None known.
Distribution: Known only from the type locality.
Ecology: This species is found in non-flooded forest.
Phenology: Flowers have been collected in Sep.
Pollination: No reports of pollination have been recorded.
Dispersal: Although nothing is known about the seeds of this species, it is presumed that they are either wind dispersed like terra firme species of the genus or water dispersed like the riverine Allantoma lineata.
Predation: No observations recorded.
Field characters: This species can be recognized by its medium size; leaves with percurrent venation; inflorescences that are short and sparsely branched; and small flowers that are yellow with 10-12 reflexed stamens.
Taxonomic notes: When Flora Neotropica Monograph 21(1) was published (Prance & Mori, 1979) only one species was recognized in Allantoma, but Huang et al. (2008) demonstrated that some of the species of Cariniana were actually species of Allantoma and transferred them to Allantoma which now includes seven species.
Conservation: IUCN Red List: Endangered B1+2c ver 2.3 (Pires O'Brien, J. 1998. Cariniana pauciramosa. In: IUCN 2013. IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Version 2013.2. www.iucnredlist.org. Downloaded on 11 February 2014.). IUCN lists this species as Cariniana pauciramosa.
Uses: None known.
Etymology: The name pauciramosa refers to the sparsely branched inflorescences found in this species.
