Description:
Author: Scott A. Mori, Ghillean T. Prance & Nathan P. Smith
Type: Brazil. Terr. Rondônia: Cataqui-Iamain, Campos dos Urupas, Jan 1919 (fl, fr), J. G. Kuhlmann 2206 (holotype, RB).
Description: Trees to 15 m tall, the young branches glabrous, lenticellate. Leaves: petioles 15-20 x 0.3 mm, glabrous, slightly winged to base, not canaliculate; blades elliptic to oblong-ovate, 8.5-15 x 4.5-8.0 cm, glabrous on both surfaces, the base subcuneate, decurrent onto petiole, the margins crenulate, the apex acuminate, acumen 10-15 mm long, finely pointed; venation eucamptodromous, the midrib prominulous above, prominent and glabrous beneath, the secondary veins in 14-18 pairs, prominulous on both surfaces, 3.0-8.0 mm apart at base, without domatia at junction with midrib, the tertiary veins percurrent. Inflorescences terminal and subterminal panicles to 11 cm long, 4 branched (in single type specimen examined), the rachis and branches glabrous, not crustaceous. Flowers sessile; calyx ca 2.0 mm long, the lobes triangular, acute, glabrous, ca. 1 mm long; petals oblong, 6-7 mm long, creamish white; androecium ca. 2 mm diam. at base, with 13-14 reflexed stamens (6-7 terminal, and 7-8 inserted on interior); gynoecium 3-locular, the ovules numerous per locule, the style very short. Fruit not distinctly costate longitudinally, the calycine ring apical or absent, not lipped at line of opercular dehiscence, the opercular rim without teeth.
Common names: None known.
Distribution: Known only from a few collections in Rondônia, Brazil.
Ecology: Very little is known about the ecology of this species.
Phenology: Flowers have been collected in Jan and Apr.
Pollination: No reports of pollination have been recorded.
Dispersal: Although nothing is known about the seeds of this species, it is presumed that they are either wind dispersed like terra firme species of the genus or water dispersed like the riverine Allantoma lineata.
Predation: No observations recorded.
Field characters: In addition to being a small tree, characters that define this species are leaf blades that are 8.5-15 cm long, with crenulate margins, 14-18 pairs of secondary veins and percurrent tertiary venation, and a lack domatia on the abaxial surface; flowers that are small with a thick androecium and 13-14 reflexed stamens; and fruits that are not distinctly costate.
Taxonomic notes: When Flora Neotropica Monograph 21(1) was published (Prance & Mori, 1979) only one species was recognized in Allantoma, but Huang et al. (2008) demonstrated that some of the species of Cariniana were actually species of Allantoma and transferred them to Allantoma which now includes seven species.
Conservation: IUCN Red List: Currently listed as Cariniana kuhlmannii. Critically Endangered B1+2c ver 2.3 (Pires O'Brien, J. 1998. Cariniana kuhlmannii. In: IUCN 2013. IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Version 2013.2. www.iucnredlist.org. Downloaded on 10 February 2014.).
Uses: None known.
Etymology: This species was named in honor of João Geraldo Kuhlmann.
