Genus Description - Monoecious palms; leaves pinnate, pseudo-petiole, ie, a petiole-like extension of the sheath often more or less fibrous or spinose at margin. Inflorescences bisexual; staminate flowers with six stamens, pistillate flowers with a small staminodial ring; fruit one-seeded, endocarp three-vittate within, ie, with three lustrous dark-brown bands running from the pores to the apex on the inner side of the endocarp.

Discussion:
Type. S. cocoides Martius.
The genus Syagrus may comprise about 40 species in tropical South America, mainly in southeastern Brazil and northern Paraguay. A single species, until recently known only from the Andes of western Venezuela and Colombia, was collected recently in Edo Bolivar, Venezuela.
