Description:

Distribution and Ecology - Tree to 30 m, described from French Guiana, reported from British Guiana and found in the border regions between Venezuela and Brazil in the Guayana Highland, with possibly a close affinity in Trinidad and Tobago.

Discussion:

Mespilodaphne ? oblonga Meissner in DC. Prodr. 15(1): 107. 1804; in Martius Fl Brasil. 5(2): 200. 1866.

Type. “In Guiana gall. circa Acarouani 1855, v. Karouany 1857,” P. Sagot 491 (isotype, female fl. NY).

The leaves of Bernardi 2745 are smaller than those of the Steyermark collection, but otherwise the specimens seem to be conspecific. The possible relationship between this species and O. cuprea from Tarapoto, Peru has been discussed under the latter species. [See Allen, Mem. N. Y. Bot. Gard. 10(5) : 87. 1964.]
