Description:

Distribution and Ecology - Distribution. A tree of varying height from 4-20 m, with large, coriaceous leaves subtended by sturdy petioles up to 3 cm long, the inflorescences up to 30 cm, axillary and/or subterminal, occurring along rivers in the Guianas, neighboring Amapa in Brazil and reported in the Amazon River Basin.BRAZIL. Amapa: Rio Oiapoque, beira, A. Ducke 4758 (fl. MG) ; occasional, about 5 km north of Cachoeira Tres Saltos, H. S. Irwin, J. M. Pires & L. Y. Th. Westra 48235 (fl., y.fr. NY); Rio Araguari, vicinity of Camp 8, J. M. Pires, Wm. Rodrigues & G. C. Irvine 50893 (fl., y.fr. NY). Amazonas: Manaus, igarape do Leao, terreno firme, arenoso, mata virgem, Luis Coelho 5727 (fl. Discussion:

Type. “Ad ripas fluminis Surinami, prope Joden-savanna. Novbr.” Herb. Kegel 1185 (holotype, fl. GOET, not seen).

Aiouea scandens Ducke, included under this species by Kostermans, differs in habit, which the collector gives as climbing, and in a variation in staminal structure. If this is the correct disposition of Ducke’s species, it presents further evidence of the instability of the group.
