Description:

Genus Description - This genus, like Marlierea exclusively American, probably consists of more than 100 species. Also like Marlierea it has many species in southern Brazil, some species in the Amazonian region, and numerous species in the Guayana region. Unlike Marlierea it is well developed in the West Indies (about 100 described species, but probably actuahy fewer), and in continental North America (more than 25 species; see McVaugh, Fieldiana Bot. 29: 397-412. 1963). The Guayana species of Calyptranthes are mostly lowland plants; only the group with keeled branchlets (C. lucida, C. pulchella and C. pullei) seems to be montane, and even in this assemblage there appear to be no high-montane endemics. Six species are known only from the upper Amazon and Orinoco basins, 7 from the Guianas or from Amapa, 1 species (C. fasciculata) ranges from Para to the Antilles, and another (C. forsteri) seems to occupy a disjunct range in southwestern Venezuela and in the Lesser Antilles.
