Description:

Distribution and Ecology - Widely distributed from Mexico to southern Brazil: Mexico, Central America, West Indies, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, the Guianas, Brazil (Amazonas, southern Brazil). VENEZUELA. Bolivar: vicinity of Los Patos, 2 km SE of Los Patos, N of Rio Hadia, about 15 km N of Rio Supamo, 30 km S of El Manteco, alt 365 m, 8 Aug 1960, Steyermark 87008 (NY).

Discussion:

Phyllanthus nobilis Mull.-Arg. in DC., Prodr. 15(2): 414. 1866.

Type: Margaritaria nobilis L. f., Suppl. 428 (excl. plant: quae Combretacea).

Margaritaria is separated from Phyllanthus by the indehiscent fruit, the fleshy seedcoat, the non-phyllanthoid branching, the tetramerous flowers, and annular (female) disk. The number of locules of the ovary is variable, mostly 4 - 5, rarely 3. Its relatives are in the West Indies; it is poorly represented south of our area.
