Genus Description - Caespitose, monoecious, perennial, herbaceous bamboos; culms usually dimorphic; vegetative culms erect, leafy, sterile, bearing a pinnate- to palmate-appearing leaf complement; floriferous culms decumbent, creeping, often buried in leaf litter, with leaves reduced to bladeless sheaths, all nodes bearing racemiform inflorescences only partially exserted from sheaths; individual inflorescences bearing a terminal pistillate spikelet accompanied by several staminate spikelets below it. Spikelets 1-flowered, the pistillate much larger than staminate. Pistillate spikelets borne on clavate pedicels; glumes as long as spikelet, subequal, elliptic-ovate, short-apiculate, often purplish, 5-veined; floret elliptical, indurate, pubescent, nearly as long as glumes, becoming marbled with dark spots at maturity. Staminate spikelets borne on filiform pedicels, deciduous, hyaline, lacking glumes.
