Genus Description - Perennials, caespitose or rhizomatous; culms central or lateral, surrounded by bladeless sheaths. Leaves basal or cauline, the sheaths often tinged reddish, the blades 1-3-veined, M-shaped in transverse section. Inflorescences paniculate-cymose, arising from 2-5 nodes of the culm, with many capitulae, the capitulae of few to many spikes; spikes compound, sessile, ± globose, comprising 6 scales, the basal 3 scales empty, the distal 3 each subtending a staminate spikelet, the pistillate spikelet terminal. Stigmas 2 or 3. Fruits achene-like, ovoid to globose, the base often ridged or spongy.
