Description:
Species Description - Plants 20-60 cm tall, forming a subbulbous or crateriform rosette, green. Leaves 22-45(70) cm long, sparsely to subdensely lepidote; sheath ovate, 7-11 cm long, entire, pale to dark brown adaxially and purple-red on upper half toward the margins adaxially; blade rigid, sub-strap-shaped or triangularlanceolate, (1)4-6 cm wide, densely serrate or subdensely dentate with 3-5 mm long spines, attenuate, acute, or acuminate. Inflorescences 25-35(60) cm long, 1-branched, with few to over 20 lateral branches, the flowers densely or rarely subdensely grouped, fertile part cylindric, the peduncle prominent, mostly erect, 20-40 cm long, the spikelets dense, distichously 4-8-flowered, appearing fasciculate, 1.7-3 X ca. 1.5 cm wide, the floral bracts ecarinate or finely carinate toward apex, suborbicular, 0.8 cm long, entire, sparsely (white-floccose) lepidote abaxially, red. Flowers secund at anthesis, sessile; sepals strongly asymmetrical, 0.4 cm long, free; petals white, yellow, or orange-red.
