Description:
Species Description - Medium-sized, single-stemmed plants, 4-12(20) m X 4 -15 cm, the trunk smooth, grayish, swollen at base, the internodes 8-15 cm long, barely visible. Leaves 6-12, erect, obliquely or horizontally oriented, arching; sheath 15-70 cm long, fibrous; petiole 20-120 cm long, hemicylindrical, greenish-brown-lepidote; blade simple, bifid at apex, and 150-250 X 20-30 cm when trunk less than 3 m tall, plumose and pinnate with rachis 1.6-3.3 m long when trunk more than 3 m tall; pinnae 70-110, oriented in several planes and borne in 30-40 groups of 2-4(5) on each side, straight, linear to very narrowly elliptic, 14-90 X 0.5-3.5 cm, decreasing in width from middle of leaf toward both base and apex. Inflorescences 1-3 per plant; peduncle 30-75 cm long, curved, greenish-brown-lepidote; prophyll tubular, flattened, membranous, brown, 20-50 cm long; peduncular bract woody, the curved upper half deeply sulcate and fusiform, mucronate at tip, 0.9-1.3 m long; rachis 15-50 cm long, green, bearing 15-30(60) rachillae, these yellow at anthesis, 20-60 cm long. Fruits 10-20 per rachilla, ellipsoid to ovoid, glabrous, smooth, 4-5 X 2.5-3 cm, green, turning yellowish-orange at maturity.
