Description:

Species Description - Medium-sized, multi-stemmed plants of understory, with 2-6 trunks 1.5-3 m X 2.5-5 cm, the internodes 2-12 cm long, armed with black spines 1-4 cm long. Leaves 6-12, erect; sheath 15-80 cm long, brownish green, densely armed with black spines 1-5 cm long; petiole 20-120 cm long, yellowish green, terete, canaliculate above, armed with black spines to 7 cm long; rachis 0.8-2.5 m long, basally armed with black spines; blade pinnate, with 12-30 pinnae per side, pinnae oblanceolate to sigmoid, long-acuminate, 20-60 X 3— 7 cm, oriented in several planes and borne in groups of 2-7; the segments of apical pair usually much wider (6—16 cm). Inflorescences 1 or 2, interfoliar, arching; peduncle strongly recurved, 9-25 cm long; prophyll flattened, sometimes spinulose at apex, 8-20 X 3-5 cm; peduncular bract 20-38 cm long, usually strongly recurved, densely covered with darkbrown, soft hairs to 1 cm long intermixed with yellowish hairs, especially in lower half; rachis 3-6 cm long, bearing many slender rachillae 5-15 cm long. Fruits globose, setose, ±2 cm diam., orange to bright red at maturity.

Distribution and Ecology - Fl (Jun-Nov), fr (Dec-May); found only in swamp forest, in particular along Crique Cochon. Zagrinette, ti-wara.
