Description:

Species Description - Small herbs, mostly 30-60 cm tall, sometimes to 1 m. Stems erect, the internodes 1.5-3(4) X 1-1.7(2.5) cm, drying considerably narrower. Leaves: petiole 5-12 cm long, drying 2-3 mm diam., subterete, uniformly pale green to purplish, sheathing for 5-9 cm, the sheath tapering and ending gradually, to 1 cm wide; blade narrowly oblong-elliptic to obovate- elliptic or oblanceolate, 14.5-39 X 4.2-11.5 cm, often oblique to falcate, acute to cuneate at base, gradually acuminate at apex, subcoriaceous, dark green above, sometimes with a fish-tailed pattern along midrib; midrib slightly raised but flattened and concolorous above, narrowly rounded and paler below, the primary lateral veins 10-14 per side. Inflorescences solitary, the peduncle 3.5-6 cm long; spathe yellowish green, 10-13 X 2 cm, turning orange in age; spadix sessile, the pistillate portion ca. 3 cm long, with widely scattered flowers, the sterile staminate portion ca. 2.5 cm X 3 mm, with widely scattered flowers, the fertile staminate portion narrowly tapered toward apex, ca. 2 cm X 4 mm. Fruits reddish, ca. 5 mm diam. In the Guianas, fl (Jun, Jul, Dec), appearing to flower twice per year, mature fr (Dec-Feb and Jun-Aug)
