Description:
Genus Description - Dioecious shrubs or small trees. Leaves simple, entire, alternate or nearly whorled; stipules wanting. Flowers actinomorphic, 4- merous, unisexual, in umbelliform, racemose, or capitate clusters on branched or unbranched extra-axillary inflorescences; hypanthium tubular, obconic to bell-shaped, the lobes unequal, reflexed or ascending; corolla of minute petals, adnate to throat of hypanthium, or wanting; stamens 8, in 2 whorls, inserted at 2 levels, the upper opposite the lobes, the lower alternating with them, the anthers sessile or on short filaments, opening by longitudinal slits; ovary on a long gynophore, ellipsoid, unilocular, the ovule solitary, pendulous, the style slender, the stigma capitate. Fruit an indehiscent, leathery, 1-seeded drupe.
