Genus Description - Trees or shrubs, glabrous or pubescent, usually with hairs simple or less often 2-branched. Leaves opposite, with translucent oil glands. Flowers small to medium, produced in axillary panicles; bracts and bracteoles persistent; hypanthium prolonged or not beyond the ovary; sepals 5 or less often 4; petals 5 or 4, white, spreading at anthesis, deciduous; stamens numerous, the filaments free, the anthers opening by longitudinal slits; ovary 2-(3)- locular, each locule with 2 ovules, the style filiform, the stigma punctiform. Fruit a l(-3)-seeded berry, crowned by the sepals.

Distribution and Ecology - About 300 species, from tropical and subtropical America.
