Description:

Genus Description - Trees or shrubs, glabrous or pubescent, usually with simple, rusty-brown hairs; branches usually pseudodichotomous (in our area). Leaves opposite, coriaceous, with translucent oil glands. Flowers small, produced in axillary or terminal panicles; bracts and bracteoles deciduous; calyx completely closed in bud (calyptrate), with an operculum (lid) that pops up as the flower matures, then the calyx becoming truncate; petals usually wanting or inconspicuous; stamens numerous, the filaments free, inserted on the margin of the hypanthium, the anthers opening by longitudinal slits; ovary 2-locular, the locules with 2 ovules, the style filiform, the stigma punctiform. Fruit a 1- or 2-seeded berry crowned by a hypanthium.
