Species Description - Erect or procumbent, annual or short-lived perennial herb, to U-1.5) m tall; stems weakly branched, pubescent, eglandular. Leaves simple, opposite; blades 3-11 x 1.5-6 cm, elliptic to ovate, chartaceous, eglandular, strigose, the upper surface weakly so, pinnatley 3- veined from the near base, the apex nearly acuminate to obtuse, the base abruptly contracted and attenuate, the margins subentire to somewhat serrate; petioles obscure or to 2.5 cm long, commonly winged. Inflorescence of 1 to several heads clustered in leaf axils, subsessile or nearly so, rarely long - pedunculate. Heads radiate, 9-18 flowered, ca. 9x 4mm; involucre cylindrical; involucral bracts few, subequal, striate, elliptic-lanceolate, strigose, the outer 1-3 foliaceous; receptacle convex, minute, paleate, the palea ca. 6x1 mm, narowly elliptic, concave; peduncle 0.5(-4) cm long. Ray flowers 3-6, pistillate; corollas yellow, 3-4 mm long, glabrous, the limb shortly exserted. Disk flowers ca. 8, bisexual; corollas yellow, to 3.5 mm long, shortly 4- or 5-lobed, the lobes pubescent; anthers black. Achenes dimorphic; ray achenes 3-5 mm long, oblong-ovoid, flattened, winged, the wings deeply cut and grading into 2 stout pappus awns, the awns and the marginal teeth ca. 1 mm long; disk achenes ca. 3 mm long, obconic, slightly compressed, with 2(-3) stout divaricate awns, the awns to ca. 3 mm long.
