Description:

Species Description - Tree, to 20 m; branchlets terete, glabrous. Leaves rigid-coriaceous, shiny yellowish-green, elliptic, 10-19 x 7-9.8 cm, base rotundate, apex acuminate, acumen 1-2 cm long, margins hardly thickened, glabrous, midrib and 6-8 pairs of lateral veins per side flattish above, glabrous except for a few hairs on and along slightly prominent midrib, finely, prominulously reticulate beneath; petioles glabrous, 1-2.5 cm long. Peduncles ± clustered at top of branchlets, reddish, sparsely pilose or glabrous; pedicels glabrous; 3-4.5 mm long. Flowers sparsely pilose or glabrous, pale green or yellowish, 1-2 mm long, floral tube obconical (campanulate towards end of anthesis), pilose within, tepals shorter or as long as tube, densely pilose within; stamens of series I and II fertile, series III and IV staminodial; outer 6 stamens with basal-latrorse cells, connective strongly protruding beyond the cells, truncate, filaments distinctly narrower than the anthers, pilose, shorter than anthers plus connective; staminodes of series III of same length, slightly enlarged towards apex, pilose, with large glands; staminodes of series IV triangular, stalks short, pilose; ovary globose or ovate, merging into somewhat obconical style of same length; stigma much bigger than cross-section of style. Fruit black, 1.7 x 1 cm; cupule red, pateriform, merging into enlarged pedicel (1 cm long).

Discussion:

Silva 881 differs in that it has stamens with slightly shorter connectives, smaller staminodes of series III and a somewhat shorter and thicker style. Additional collections may support its recognition as a subspecies.

In the otherwise fine illustration provided by Allen (1964), the staminodes IV are missing. She thought the species to be dioecious and accordingly placed it in Endlicheria, yet states “the leaves and habit of the inflorescence strongly suggest Aiouea.”
