Description:
Species Description - Small tree, rarely to 30 m; wood yellow; branchlets rather slender, 2-3 mm thick, smooth, shiny, lenticellate, at top slightly appressed-tomentellous, soon glabrescent; terminal bud slender, sericeous-tomentellous, ca. 0.6 cm long. Leaves evenly distributed along branchlets or indistinctly subverticillate, chartaceous or subcoriaceous, glabrous, 1.8-3.3 times longer than wide, 9-21 x 3-6.5 cm, base angustate or acute, margin slightly recurved, apex shortly obtusely acuminate, midrib and nerves flattish or slightly impressed above, midrib prominent beneath, nerves 8-13 per side, prominulous, erect-patent, ± arcuately united near margin, veins reticulate, prominulous; petioles glabrous, flattish or canaliculate above, 0.6-1 cm long. Panicles subterminal, in the axils of caducous bracts and/or persistent leaves, many-flowered, laxly tomentellous, 10-16 cm long. Rowers 2.2 x 2 mm, minutely rusty-tomentellous; floral tube abruptly enlarged into the perianth, glabrous inside; pedicels thin, 1-2 mm long; tepals erect, ovate-orbicular, glabrous inside, ciliate at margin, ca. 1.2 mm long; stamens included, 0.8 mm long, outer ones with broad, glabrous anthers with ventral or ventral-lateral cells (the papillose connectives slightly protruding beyond the cells), tapering into the pilose filaments, inner stamens with subglobose, glabrous, truncate anthers, small dorsal cells and pilose, biglandulose filaments; staminodes minute, stipitiform, glabrous, or absent; pistil 1.5-1.8 mm long, glabrous, rarely laxly pilose; style nearly as thick as ovary; stigma minute, truncate. Berry ellipsoid, 2.2 x 1 cm; cupule cyathiform, 0.8 x 1.0 cm, slightly verruculous outside.

Discussion:
Kostermans (1938b) was uncertain about the independent status of citrifolia and A. trinitatis. He distinguished the two species mainly on the basis of characters which change with age (color of branchlets) or which are variable even in a single specimen (leaf shape).Meissner coined a new name, Aydendron trinitatis, for Aydendron citrifolium (non Nees) Grisebach which he thought to be specifically different from the genuine A. citrifolium, but Grisebach had been right in attributing the material from Trinidad to Nees’ species.Glaziou 10027, labeled as being from Espirito Santo, Serra da Itabapoana, is not a reliable record because there have been no other collections from so far south. Because this specimen is very similar to Jobert & Schwacke 309 from Para, it might have been pirated from that gathering.I have seen only four specimens with slightly pilose rather than glabrous ovaries: Glaziou 10027, Froes 1730, 32966, Jobert & Schwacke 309.
