Staminal tube globose or deeply cyathiform, 0.15-0.45 cm long, throat usually narrowed, margin entire or slightly crenate. Anthers 3-8, glabrous, inserted within throat in upper or lower half of staminal tube, completely included or partly exserted. Antherodes indehiscent, without pollen. Nectary absent. Ovary 3(-4)-locular; loculi with (l-)2 collateral to superposed ovules. Style very short and broad, terminated by a large conical 3-angled stigma. Pistillode with or without rudimentary ovules. Fruit a 2-3(-4)-valved loculicidal capsule; loculi 1-2-seeded. Seeds partly or completely surrounded by a free fleshy arillode. Embryo with plano-convex, collateral, fused cotyledons; radicle small, superior, included.

Discussion:

It may be distinguished from other genera occurring in America, both native and introduced, by its corolla of three imbricate petals, small globose staminal tube with restricted throat containing massive included anthers, and the large conical style-head. The anthers and style-head completely fill the staminal tube.
