Description:

Epiphytic tank bromeliad with short rhizome. Leaves mid-green, deep bluish-purple at base only within. Spines black. Inflorescence axis and bracts red. Calyx green. Corolla orange. Fruit white below, deep gentian-blue above. This plant is always associated with fierce black ants which sting. Phenology of specimen: Fertile.
Habitat:

Mixed restinga vegetation on sand, with high forest, low trees and shrubs, and sedge meadows with open wet areas on white sand. This plant on trees in high restinga forest.
