Mexico. Oaxaca. Terribly eroded and overgrazed slope below Pan-Am. Highway at Puerto Herrera (km 420), just nortwest of Vanhuitlan. Alt. 2500 m. (8202 ft.)

Description:

Flowers in one-sided inflorescences, bright red, with flaring throat and lobes creamy inside, with purplish red streaks, base greenish. 2.5 meters or more tall, very robust and woody stemmed, 2 cm. thick at base with many strict stems from one base. Phenology of specimen: Fertile, Flower.
Habitat:

Terribly eroded and overgrazed slope. Very steep and clayey open Quercus-Arctostaphylos woodland. With shrubby Penstemons, small Agave, few cacti, and many epiphytic Bromeliads (incl. Tillandsia usneoides), Orchidaceae (Encyclia concolor), and Schoenocaulon sp. Several large colonies just below road at very top of Puerto Herrera.
