Description:

Type: Venezuela. Miranda: Parque Nacional Guatopo, on Hwy 12, ca 9 km S of junction with Hwy 1, 25 Apr 1971 (fl, fr), Nee & Mori 4058 (holotype, WIS; isotypes, K, MO, NY, P, US, VEN).

Description: Leaf blades narrowly obovate to elliptic, 33-72 x 13-31 cm, with a length to width ratio of 2.2-2.9, the base usually obtuse, occasionally acute; secondary veins in 18-23 pairs. Pedicellary bracteoles oblong, early caducous, 10 x 4-5 mm. Hypanthium smooth.

Common names: None known.

Distribution: This variety is apparentlyc onfined to the State of Miranda, Venezuela. Two trees have been introduced into the botanical garden of the Instituto Botanico in Caracas.

Ecology: This variety is a relatively large tree of the second story of moist, forested slopes at around 500 m elevation. It is common in the forests of the Parque Nacional Guatopo of Venezuela.

Phenology: Flowers have been collected in Apr, May, Jun, and Sep. Fruits have been collected in Apr, Jun, Sep, and Nov.

Pollination: In the Parque Nacional Guatopo clouds of bees were observed swarming around the pendent inflorescences. Unfortunately the flowers were too far from the ground for detailed observation of the pollinators.

Dispersal: No reports of dispersal have been recorded.

Predation: No observations recorded.

Field characters: Gustavia flagellata var. flagellata is a plant of inland forests (usually found at ca. 500 m elevation) and has pedicellary bracteoles that are oblong, early caducous, and 10 x 4-5 mm, and an ovary without costae.

Taxonomic notes: Gustavia flagellata is the only Gustavia with the inflorescences commonly over 15 cm in length and sometimes as long as 108 cm.

Conservation: IUCN Red List: Not on list (March 2014).

Uses: None known.

Etymology: The name "flagellata" alludes to the long whiplike rachis of the inflorescence.
