Discussion:

Faramea pendula Poepp. & Endl., Nov. Gen. & Sp. 3: 29.1845.

Faramea truncala A. DC., Prodr. 4: 496. 1830, non Coffea truncata Veil., 1811 (basionym of Faramea truneala Mull.-Arg., 1875).

Type. In sylvis Caux, French Guiana, Aublet.

In Aublet’s original description, no bracts are mentioned nor are depicted in pi. 40. Aublet's plate shows three peduncles with 10-15 flowers on each peduncle. Richard (Mem. Soc. Hist. Nat. Paris 5. pl. 7, no. 1) shows a plate with 6 umbellately arranged, pedicellate flowers at the top of a peduncle, and the calyx is shown with short teeth.

In the original description of F. pendula, Poeppig and Endlicher stated that the “bractcis pedicellis aequantibus, lanceolatis,” but no such lanceolate bracts are to be found in the isotype collections I have examined from F and NY; on the F fragment there is one subulate bract 2 mm long on the outside of one of the peduncles, but apparently the other bracts have fallen from the other peduncles. The combined length of the calyx and hypanthium on the isotype specimens of F. pendula is 1.2-1.5 mm, which is only slightly longer than in the other specimens examined of F. corymbosa, in which the combined length is 1-1.2 mm, but otherwise the isotype specimens match the other specimens which I have placed with F. corymbosa.
