Description:

Species Description - Sterile plants 30-40 cm tall, flowering plants to 55 cm, forming a narrowly crateriform, cinereous rosette. Leaves rigid- coriaceous, 25-45 cm long; sheath obovate, 3.5-7 cm long, dark brown or castaneous for most of length; blade very narrowly triangular, obscurely carinate, 2-3 cm wide, longattenuate, sharp, densely and cinereously lepidote. Inflorescences 33-47 cm long, unbranched or digitately compound of 2-4 branches, the peduncle erect, 10-25 cm long, the spikelets densely and distichously 5-17-flowered, complanate, lanceolate, 8-20 X 2.3-3.5 cm, the floral bracts markedly carinate, elliptic, 4.5-5.5 cm long, glabrous except for extreme apex, lustrous-green, often tinged with rose, or yellowish. Flowers appressed, sessile; sepals 3.3-4 cm long, distinctly carinate, the posterior ones markedly connate; petals tubular-erect, blue-violet, rounded at apex.
