Type. COSTA RICA. Alajuela: alrededores de Bebedero, Guanacaste, fl. [female] + fr. mat. July 2, 1930, Alberto M. Brenes 12,724 (holotype, NY; isotype, F). This remarkable species is known like the related D. mexicana Bullock only from the pistillate plant bearing flowers and ripe drupes. The two species are alike in their ample 5-lobed leaf-blades and inconspicuous flowers. By comparison with D. spadicea the stems of D. mexicana are glabrous, the leaf-blade much more deeply lobed, and the peduncle of the pistillate flower much shorter and proportionately stouter. The endocarps of the two species are similar in general form, but that of D. mexicana is incurved, with merely undulate and not serrate lateral ribs and keels and with only a few inconspicuous papilli in the intervening grooves. The pistillate inflorescence of D. spadicea, with its filiform peduncle terminating in a little club-shaped or spadix-like spike of minute brown flowers is one of the curiosities of a genus rich in such features. The epithet spadicea refers both to the form and color of the inflorescence.
