Passifloraceae
Description:
Species Description - A softly hairy, slightly woody, broad-leaved vine, frequent in Porto Rico woodlands and thickets, in wet or moist districts, ascending to at least 700 meters elevation, and growing also in Vieques island; it is distributed nearly throughout the West Indies and tropical continental America. For an account of the genus we refer to our description of Passiflora foetida. Passiflora rubra (red, referring to the corona of the flower) is slightly woody, from 1 to 2 meters long, or sometimes longer. Its thin, 5-nerved leaves are broader than long, from 7 to 12 centimeters wide, usually broadly 2-lobed, with a deeply heart-shaped base, the lobes pointed; the leaf-stalks are from 1 to 4 centimeters long. The flowers are solitary, or 2 together in the axils, on slender stalks longer than the leaf-stalks; the flower-stalks are jointed under the flowers, which are from 3 to 5 centimeters broad, the 5 sepals, greenish-white within, purple without, somewhat longer than the 5, yellowish-white petals; the corona consists of 3 series of white, reddish-blotched awl-shaped processes, about as long as the petals. The hairy, oval or nearly globular berry is from 2 to 4 centimeters in diameter, 6-ribbed, longer than its stalk.
