Definition:
A cut at right angles to the long axis of an organ. Same as transverse section.

In the Lecythidaceae, cross sections of the ovary are useful because they allow determine the number of locules, the presence or absence of mucilage ducts and cross sections of the wood reveal a number of characters only seen in that type of section. They also reveal placentation characters such as the number of ovules per locule and the relationship of the septa to the placentae.
