Description: Apex of stem of Gustavia monocaulis held by S. A. Mori based on an unvouchered plant from the El Llano-Cartí Road, Panama. This species possesses the pachycaul growth form and, as far as it is known, it is not branched (= monocaulis), i.e., the species is mostly unbranched (with one order of branching) and the first branch is called the trunk. This species is an understory tree.
