The specimen based, illustrated family checklists are lists of species of vascular plants documented with herbarium specimens from the area under consideration (either Nouragues or all of French Guiana). Clicking on the name of a species provides a list of specimens that have been identified as that species. Clicking on the name of the species or on an icon of an image (if an image is present) reveals all information associated with that collection, including images of the herbarium sheet, field images, and a map indicating where the specimen was collected. The current lists include specimens archived at The New York Botanical Garden and the Herbier de Guyane (CAY).
Note that the gymnosperms and angiosperms are not segregated into separate groups (e.g., Gnetaceae appears in alphabetical order among the angisperms), and that all of the ferns and their allies are listed under “pteridophytes.”
The family concepts follow those outlined in Smith et al. (Smith, N., S. A. Mori, A. Henderson, D. W. Stevenson & S. V. Heald. 2004. Flowering Plants of the Neotropics. Princeton University Press, Princeton, New Jersey) because the Herbarium of The New York Botanical Garden is more-or-less organized in this way. Eventually, the Herbarium will be organized according to the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group classification.
These lists are automatically generated from the database and may take a minute or two to populate. Clicking on a name in the list will generate information associated with the specimens collected by the project under that name. Images of herbarium sheets, field photos, and a map of where the specimens were collected are attached at the bottom of the label data if they are available.
