Ecuador. Pichincha. Western slope of the cordillera. Along the road from Quito to Santo Domingo de los Colorados. Alt. 2133.6 - 2590.8 m. (7000 - 8500 ft.)
Description:
Shrubs 1-3 m, arching from banks. Root with burl, seen to 0.3 m diam. (Plant also seen as high-growing epiphyte, and here the burl is also developed.) Branches sooty-black. Lvs. very deep green above; pale to subglaucous below. (Note: The gland at first black, later conspicuous by the presence of a small white mass - probably a fungus, this especially notable on lower surface and old leaves.) Hypanthium pale yellow to red, depending on exposure to sun, very shallowly grooved, the calyx margin (and sometimes the base) with notable pits. Corolla deep crimson; fruit ripening deep purple-blue, shining. Phenology of specimen: Flower.
