This very distinct species stands out in the genus by its tetramerous flowers; the filaments are membranous and broad at the base; each corolla lobe bears two stamens, the filaments of which are noticeably unequal; another very conspicuous characteristic is the winged calyx-tube and later the fruit. This is the first record of this genus in Hispaniola. This is the first mention of cataphylls for this genus. A recent revision by Nevling (Jour. Arnold Arb. 57: 221-227. 1970) Usts two species in Puerto Rico, one in the Lesser Antilles and two or possibly three in South America.
