Description:

Latin Diagnosis - Frutex ad 2-metralis; foliis petiolatis, petiohs 2-5 mm longis; laminis ovatis apice subacutis vel subacuminatis, raro obtusis, basi rotundatis vel subcordatis vel subtruncatis 4-5.5 x 2.5-6.5 cm utrinque glabris, nervis lateralibus utroque latere 4-6 supra obsoletis subtus paullo prominulis, venulis tertiariis subtus paullo reticulatis; inflorescentia axihari fasciculata 2-4-flora; pedicellis cum hypanthio articulatis 16-20 mm longis glabris in fructu ad 30 mm longis; bracteolis duobus plerumque alternis inter medium et basin pedicelli insidentibus lanceolatooblongis subacutis 1.5-2 mm longis ciliolatis; calyce hypanthioque 4-5.5 mm longo, hypanthio 2.5 x 3.5 mm campanulato; calycis limbo 1.5 mm longo apice subtruncato breviter denticulato, denticuhs depresso-late triangularibus apiculatis 0.2 X 3 mm; corolla cyhndrica 15-20 mm longa glabra, tubo 13-18 mm longo basi 2-5 mm lata, lobis sublanceolato-oblongis rotundatis vel obtusis 2-2.5 x 1-1.2 mm; staminibus 8.5 mm longitudinem tubi corollae attingentibus alternatim aequalibus, antheris alternatim 5 mm et 5.7 mm longis, thecis paullo granulosopapilllatis alternatim 2 mm et 2-2.5 mm longis, tubulis alternatim 3.5 mm et 4 mm longis per poros elongatis obliquis dehiscentibus, filamentis liberis alternatim 3 mm et 4.5 mm longis longioribus apicem versus breviter pubescentibus; stylo 17 mm longo glabro; fructu subgloboso-urceolato 7-8 x 7-8 mm glabro.

Discussion:

Type. VENEZUELA. Territorio Amazonas: Summit, Cerro Moriche, Rio Ventuari, 1250 m alt, 15 Jan 1951, sprawling shrub to 2 m high; young leaves scarlet; flowers scarlet; fruit green, Maguire, Cowan & Wurdack 30945 (holotype NY). Paratypes. VENEZUELA. Amazonas: Cerro Sipapo (Paraque), Cafio Negro, 1630 m alt, 15 Dec 1948, Maguire & Politi 27685; Cerro Sipapo (Paraque), southeast slope Park I, 1500-1820 m alt, 12 Dec 1948, Maguire & Politi 27651; Cerro Sipapo (Paraque), terraces E of Campo Grande, 8 Dec 1948, Maguire & Politi 27563-B; Cerro Sipapo (Paraque), upper Caño Negro, 6 Jan 1949, Maguire & Politi 28196. This taxon has the habit of Thibaudia truncata A. C. Smith, but the filaments are unequal and obviously of two lengths, and the pedicels, calyx, and coroUa are glabrous. Among the species of Orthaea. this taxon is related to other species in the assemblage related to O. apophysata (Griseb.) A. C. Smith.
