Family:

Ericaceae
Description:

Species Description - Epiphytic shrub; mature branches terete, glabrate, dark brown to blackish-brown, the epidermis cracking in longitudinal strips; twigs subterete, striate, muricate, tan when dry, hispid with yellowish-brown hairs 0.8-1 mm long. Leaves subcoriaceous, ovate-lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, 3-4.5 X 1-1.5 cm, basally rounded, apically acuminate, margins slightly revolute, somewhat glaucous and essentially glabrous above, pilose beneath, ciliate; 3(-5)-plinerved with midrib impressed above and raised beneath, secondary nerves weakly raised on both surfaces; petioles terete, rugose, hispid, 1.5-3 mm long and 1.5 mm in diam. Inflorescence ca. 10-15-flowered, the flowers restricted to distal ½ of inflorescence; rachis densely pilose, 1-2.3 cm long and 1.5-2 mm in basal diam. becoming 3.5-5 mm diam. distally; floral bracts, oblong to obovate, 14-16 X 7-8 mm, apically obtuse or rounded, ciliate, both surfaces pilose and provided especially at base with spherical globular glands ca. 0.1 mm in diam.; pedicels terete, striate, pilose distally, 4-6 mm long and 1 mm in diam.; bracteoles seemingly lacking. Flowers: calyx basically glabrous, 6-7 mm long; hypanthium cylindric-campanulate, 2-3 mm long, obscured by a dense covering of spherical, globular glands 0.1-0.2 mm in diam.; limb campanulate, 4 mm long, with scattered globular glands; lobes triangular, obtuse, 1.3-1.5 mm long, sparsely ciliate, the margins with 1-4 globular glands per side; sinuses rounded, sparsely ciliate; corolla cylindric but tapering distally, glabrous, 13 mm long and 5-6 mm in diam., lobes triangular, obtuse, ca. 1-1.5 mm long; stamens alternately 7 mm and 8 mm long; filaments connate into a tube 3 mm long, the filaments themselves glabrous, alternately 3-3.5 mm and 4 mm long; anthers alternately 4.2-4.5 mm and 3.5-3.8 mm long; thecae relatively smooth, 1.5-2 mm long; tubules dehiscing by broad clefts ca. 1.5 mm long; style 13 mm long. Berry not seen.

Discussion:

Within subgen. Chlamydantha, C. glandulosa is characterized by spherical globular glands which obscure the surface of the hypanthium, by connate staminal filaments, and “satyrioid” anthers which show very broad dehiscence clefts and curved tips. The staminal features are very similar to those which characterize the genus Satyria and these features are discussed more fully in the INTERGENERIC RELATIONSHIPS.

The presence of spherical glands on the calyx of C. glandulosa might seem to indicate a relationship to species in ser. Lactiviscidae (subgen. Cavendishia sect. Engleriana). However, this character has apparently arisen independently in both subgenera. Closer affinities are to be sought with C. speciosa which also has spherical glands (albeit much smaller) on the floral bracts, rachis, bracteoles (when present), and calyx lobe margins.
