Description:
Description: Shrub with stems glabrous, minutely striate, strongly winged, the wings arising at the nodes. Leaves thick-coriaceous, narrowly ovate-elliptic, 5-8 x 2.3-4 cm, basally cuneate, attentuate, apically short-acuminate, marginally revolute in the proximal one-third; 3-5-plinerved, the inner nerves arising from above the base, the midrib raised and carinate in the proximal 1-2 cm but impressed distally above and conspicuously raised beneath, the lateral nerves slightly impressed above and raised beneath but inconspicuous, the reticulate veinlets obscure; petiole subterete, carinate above, 3-8 mm long, glabrous. Flowers solitary in the axils of uppermost leaves; floral bract not seen; pedicels rugose, subterete, expanding distally, glabrous, ca. 11-12 mm long; bracteoles near the base, ovate, 1 mm long; calyx 5-winged, glabrous but with scattered glandular fimbriae, ca. 9 mm long; hypanthium rugulose, 4-5 mm long, the wings 1-1.5 mm broad; limb 4-5 mm long; lobes less than 1 mm long; corolla cylindric-campanulate, glabrous, ca. 40 mm long and 10 mm in proximal diam. when dry, color unknown, the lobes deltate, ca. 2 mm long and 6 mm broad when fresh but tearing to 7 mm long when dry; stamens ca. 34 mm long; filaments apparently connate (unclear in specimens at hand), glabrous, 3-4 mm long; anthers 30-33 mm long; thecae 8-9 mm long; tubules dehiscing by subterminal clefts to 5 mm long. Berry not seen.
Distribution: Endemic to Colombia and known only from the type, which was collected in a very humid Andean forest at 2550 m elevation with Quercus, Weinmannia, melastomes, and ericads. It was flowering in July.
Type: Colombia, Huila, Parque Nacional Cueva de los Guacharos y Cerro Punta, 2550 m, 3 Jul 1974 (fl), Cleef 5034 (holotype: COL, photo: NY neg. 11109; isotype: L).
Conservation status: Rare and endangered.
