Description:
Description: Epiphytic shrub, sometimes lianoid with branches to 3 m long; stem thin, terete, glabrous; twigs subterete, bluntly complanate, striate, glabrous or minutely puberulent. Leaves chartaceous, elliptic, oblong-elliptic, or ovate-lanceolate, 10-25 x 3-8 cm, base cuneate to rounded, apex abruptly cuspidate-acuminate to acuminate, margin entire, glabrous or nerves puberulent beneath; 3(5-)-plinerved from near the base, midrib impressed to plane distally above, prominently raised beneath, inner lateral nerves joined with midrib for up to 1 cm, impressed above and prominently raised beneath, reticulate veinlets plane to slightly impressed above, slightly raised beneath but often not conspicuous; petiole terete, rugose, 4-7(-9) mm long, glabrous to puberulent. Inflorescence axillary, short-racemose,ca. 5-flowered; rachis subterete, smooth, congested, to 12 mm long, glabrous; floral bract erect or reflexed, ovate, acute,ca. 2 mm long; pedicel subterete, thin, 9-17 mm long, glabrous or puberulent, with glandular fimbriae at distal tip; bracteoles nearly basal, broadly ovate, acute,ca. 1-1.5 mm long, marginally glandular-fimbriate, the base sometimes darker in color and possibly there glandular. Flowers with calyxca. 4 mm long; hypanthium campanulate or cylindric,ca. 1-2.5 mm long, glabrous or puberulent; limb campanulate-spreading,ca. 1.5-2 mm long andca. 3.5 mm diam.; lobes broadly ovate, apiculate, less than 1 mm long, the margins appearing thin or torn; sinuses acute; corolla cylindric, swollen below, once-constricted near apex, 15-18 mm long and 4-5 mm diam., glabrous, sparsely glandular-fimbriate distally, rose-red basally turning white at constriction at throat, the lobes spreading and reflexed, oblong-triangular, acute,ca. 3 mm long, white; stamen (8-)10,ca. 8.5-9 mm long; filaments distinct,ca. 3 mm long, glabrous or minutely ciliolate distally, the connectives conspicuously spurred at apex, the alternate ones more prominent; anthersca. 6.8-7 mm long; thecaeca. 3.5-4.5 mm long, the base sometimes incurved; tubules distinct or coherent near base,ca. 2.3-2.5 mm long, dehiscing by cleftsca. 1.5 mm long; style exserted, glabrous. Immature berry spherical,ca. 10 mm diam., green.
Distribution: Endemic to the Oriente of Ecuador; tropical moist and wet forest to premontane wet and rainforest at 250-1450 m altitude.
Type: Ecuador. Pastaza: Pacayacu, 200 m, 30 Jul 1937 (fl), Schultz-Rhonhof 2428 (holotype, B?). Ecuador. Napo: Estación Biológica Jatun Sacha, along Río Napo, 8 km E of Misahuallí, 450 m, Palacios 2438 (neotype, designated by Luteyn (1996), NY; isoneotypes, MO, QCNE).
