Description:
Description: Epiphytic shrub; stem terete, striate, glabrous; twigs subterete, bluntly angled, striate, densely white puberulent, glabrate. Leaves coriaceous, ovate to ovate-elliptic, 3.5-5.6 x 1.2-1.8 cm, base rounded to broadly obtuse, apex long-acuminate, margin entire and slightly revolute, glabrous on both surfaces, lacking glandular fimbriae; 3(-5)-plinerved, midrib weakly impressed in the proximal 1/2-3/4 becoming plane to slightly raised in the distal 1/2-1/4 above, lateral nerves and reticulate veinlets slightly raised above, all nerves slightly raised beneath; petiole subterete, strongly canaliculate above, 4-6 mm long, densely puberulent, glabrate. Inflorescence axillary, solitary, racemose, 6-9-flowered, surrounded at the base by a series of broadly ovate bracts to 2 mm long; rachis subterete, sharply angled, 1.5-2.5 cm long, glabrous, eglandular; lowest 3-4 floral bracts sterile (without flowers), the more distal fertile ones conduplicate or concave, oblong-obovate, rounded, 7-16 x 4-7 mm, glabrous, eglandular, surrounded the buds and then spreading and becoming strongly reflexed through and post-anthesis; pedicel subterete, striate, 7-10 mm long, glabrous; bracteoles basal, oblong, rounded, 1.5-2 mm long, glabrous, but marginally conspicuously glandular-fimbriate in the distal 1/3. Flowers with calyx 4-5 mm long, glabrous; hypanthium cylindric, broadly and bluntly ribbed, 1.5-2 mm long, the base shallowly but distinctly apophysate; limb erect-spreading to cylindric-campanulate, 2.5-3 mm long; lobes ovate, ca. 1 mm long, erect after anthesis, the margin lacerate-glandular, dark in color and apparently thinner than lamina proper; sinuses acute; corolla cylindrical, slightly narrowing at the throat, 14-16.5 mm long and ca. 5 mm diam, the lobes slightly spreading, ovate, apiculate, ca. 1 mm long; stamens of overall equal length, ca. 13.5 mm long; filaments distinct, alternately ca. 4.5 mm and 2 mm long, glabrous; anthers alternately ca. 10.7 mm and 12.3 mm long; thecae alternately ca. 4.7 mm and 3 mm long; tubules alternately ca. 6 mm and 9.5 mm long, dehiscing by clefts about half the tubule length; style equalling the corolla, glabrous. Berry not seen.
Distribution: Endemic to Costa Rica (Limón Prov.) and known only from the type locality and one other collection, at 500-700 m.
Conservation Status: Rare and probably endangered.
Type: Costa Rica. Limón: Cantón de Talamanca, Alto Urén, road between Quebrada Chaho and Croriña, 9°20'50"N, 82°59'00"W, 700 m, 23 Jul 1989 (fl), G. Herrera 3321 (holotype: NY; isotype: INB).
